Algebra 1 / Chapter 6: Exponentiation / Introduction

Introduction

In this chapter, we are going to explore exponentiation. Exponentiation involves multiplying the same number many times, just as multiplication is adding the same number many times.

The superscript tells us how many times to multiply the number. For example,

23 = 2⋅2⋅2 = 8

This operation is also called "2 to the power of 3" or "2 to the 3rd power." 2 is the base and 3 is the power.

We will first explore the properties of exponentiation, then study logarithms, which are the inverse of exponentiation.
