Algebra I / Chapter 2: Multiplication And Division / Introduction

Introduction

In this chapter, we are going to explore the properties of multiplication and division.

Multiplying a number is the same as adding the number repeatedly. For example,

5 ⋅ 3 = 5 + 5 + 5

In other words, multiplying 5 and 3 is the same as adding 5, 3 times.

Division is the "inverse" of multiplication, just as subtraction is the inverse of addition. For example,

5 ⋅ 3 = 15

so

15 / 3 = 5

and

15 / 5 = 3

As before, we will learn how to solve equations that contain variables. Here are some examples:

x ⋅ 3 = 27

45 / c = 3

We will also explore strategies that we can use to simplify more complex equations such as:

x / y ⋅ z ⋅ y = 27 ⋅ z
