Algebra I / Chapter 1: Addition And Subtraction / Properties of Addition

Additive Property of Equality

We can add a value to each side of the equation. More precisely:

if a = b, then a + c = b + c

If some equation is true, then it will stay true after we add a value to each side.

In Logicwalk, this property is actually an example of substitution, but since it is commonly labeled a property, we will adopt the same naming convention.

Here are some examples:

if x = y, then x + 3 = y + 3

if i + 1 = j, then (i + 1) + k = j + k

if distance AB = distance XY, then (distance AB) + 11 = (distance XY) + 11

Quiz (1 point)
